Groom was not exactly a math genius.
NEW DELHI: An Indian bride made a hasty exit from her own wedding ceremony after her husband-to-be failed to answer a basic math problem, reported local police on Friday.
The woman decided to abandon the nuptials after she asked the groom to add 15 and six. When he answered 17, she nipped the marriage in the bud before it even began.
The groom’s family tried to convince the runaway bride to return, but she was adamant on her decision.
A police official from Rasoolabad village in Uttar Pradesh told BBC Hindi that local resident Mohar Singh had arranged for his daughter — named Lovely — to wed to a man called Ram Baran.
“But just before the marriage ceremony Lovely came to know that Ram Baran is illiterate and she refused to marry,” he said.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Mohar Singh lamented that the “groom’s family had kept us in the dark about his poor education.” “Even a first grader can answer this [that math problem],” he said.
Just last month another ceremony in Uttar Pradesh was bizarrely curtailed when the groom had an epileptic seizure, which prompted his fiancé to abandon him at the altar in order to pick a wedding guest to marry on the spot instead.
The original groom was treated at a nearby hospital and was appalled when he returned to find his bride-to-be married to another man.
The bride was livid that she had been kept in the dark about the originally betrothed groom’s medical history, and when she refused to reconsider her decision, the man’s relatives even resorted to violence to try and change her mind. Fortunately, local police reported eventually “both families … amicably resolved the matter.”
